Real Stories, Real Growth – Hear from Our Camp Families.

Transformative Experiences Shared by Mowglis Families

Discover how Camp Mowglis has impacted the lives of campers and their families through personal testimonials.

Our family was introduced to Mowglis in 2002. Our oldest son had spent 3 weeks the previous summer at a large boys camp on Lake Champlain. While this was/is a wonderful camp, with a long and storied history, we found it was just too big for our son. However, being believers in the camp experience we investigated several other traditional boys camps in Maine before deciding on Mowglis. What appealed to us about Mowglis was the small and nurturing environment, the emphasis on traditional camp activities, the crew program and the seven week length of stay. We also appreciated that the boys and staff came from all over the country and the community included international boys (as opposed to drawing a lot of boys from the same town). My husband and his brothers had all attended an 8 week camp, and he felt strongly this was an important part of the personal growth that happens over the course of several summers. We are now the parents of 3 Mowglis graduates and all our boys have also been on the staff. I know they had opportunities that would not have been available to them at a larger camp; but, more importantly, I know they learned lessons about values and character that will last a lifetime.Read moreRead less

My sons started going to Camp Mowglis when they were 8 and 12 years old. We live in France and my youngest barely spoke English. The first year, he was signed up for just half the summer. When I came to visit them after 3 weeks, my youngest said that if he couldn't stay until the end of the summer, he would never speak to me again! 10 years later, at age 18, he still goes back as a junior counselor. My oldest has also been a member of the senior staff. Mowglis has been wonderful for my children. In spite of being and all boys camp, there is something maternal about it. Everyone knows everyone, no one gets lost in the crowd, all are taken care of. Many parents are hesitant to send their children to a seven week camp. In seven weeks, kids really have the time to let go of any family problems they might have. They have ample time to try all of the activities and make deep friendships. My children have never thought it too long. In fact, they think that an additional week would be cool. At the end of every summer, I can see how much they have grown up, become more independent and self confident. They have really absorbed the good values that camp teaches. During many summers, my children were able to experience many activities (hiking, camping, axemen-ship,sailing) in a safe and encouraging environment. Speaking of environment, there are no video games, phones, ipods allowed in camp. Children are able to have several weeks without screens in their faces. They can get "unhooked". Social relationships are the priority. As a result, kids make friends for life. Camp is on a beautiful lake surrounded by pines, the staff are as nice as could be and the values that camp exemplifies are humane and respectful of the environment. I highly recommend Camp Mowglis.Read moreRead less

Little did I realize on my first day of Mowglis back in 1967, that all these years later, the Camp would still be such an important part of my life. To this day several of the guys I met there remain some of my closest friends. Any camper who enjoys the experience of Mowglis will remember it for a life time. I always have appreciated how Mowglis doesn't just point a boy towards an activity and tells him "go have fun" but, teaches him to become proficient and how to best enjoy it. So many of the activities I take part in today - the hiking, the kayaking, all the time spent outdoors- were learned at Mowglis. Enough for the nostalgia....., It's a fun, fun place to spend a summer. Steve Minich Camp Graduate 1971Read moreRead less

A beautiful turn of the last century campground where young men learn core values, hard work, camaraderie, and life skills in an open camp setting. Campers from multiple countries, and all over the US come together for an immersive summerlong program. There are slight military touches (similar to scouts); those opposed to the NRA may wish to consider an alternative environment for their sons.Read moreRead less

I went to Mowglis in the 80's and 90's, and I often think about those summers with fondness. The memories, experiences, and relationships helped me become the person I am today. If you can, I highly recommend you send your son; you won't regret it.Read moreRead less

Everything You Need to Know – Answered

Common Questions About the Mowglis Experience

What is the origin of the name "Mowglis"?

The name “Mowglis” is derived from the man-cub in The Jungle Book stories by Rudyard Kipling. The camp’s founder, Elizabeth Ford Holt, received permission from Kipling to use his characters as inspiration for camp traditions established in 1903. Kipling advised that “Mowglis” is pronounced with “Mow” sounding like “cow,” and the plural is formed by adding a silent “s.”

Camp Mowglis is situated in East Hebron, New Hampshire, on the shores of Newfound Lake, nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains.

Mowglis is owned and operated by the Holt-Elwell Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the camp’s mission and traditions.

Campers reside in open-air dormitories with peers of similar age. Each camper is assigned a bunk and shelves for personal belongings. While trunks or duffle bags are used for packing, trunks are stored away after unpacking for the duration of the camp.

Yes, campers have the autonomy to select from 16 different activities. They sign up for instructional sessions in their chosen activities and have open periods to explore other interests. This approach encourages skill development and personal growth.

Absolutely! Campers participate in various trips, including hiking, camping, backpacking, canoeing, and kayaking. These excursions are tailored to the age and ability of the campers, ensuring safety and enjoyment for all skill levels.

While written mail is the standard form of communication, exceptions are made for international campers. Parents can email their sons and receive replies or schedule appropriate times for phone calls, typically during dinner hours.
